The first hotel on the site (SE Cnr of Mair and Doveton Streets) was the Royal Oak in 1842.
The pub was subsequently renamed the Royal Highlander in 1858 with Dr James Stewart as the owner.
The hotel was named after the leader of the miners at the Eureka Stockade, and Speaker of the Victorian Parliament, Peter Lalor in 1961
The hotel was offered for sale in October 2015
